GORGE3: HEAT ADVISORY

It was the third night of Phish at the Gorge for the first time ever AND a Sunday show. This one just had to be great right? That question should be answered with an emphatic YES!! The extra day of play gave Phish the opportunity to really get their shit together, which resulted in the first solid from end to end movement of the tour. Sunday night cannot be rebuked for either second set song selection or any inability of certain members of the band to play their own compositions with the dexterity and precision displayed in more inspired and/or inspiring times. Gorge 3 had it all: great song selection, well crafted flow, some deep dark jams, and a general absence of clams. However, before we dig a little deeper, I have to ask one question. The same one that spread like any one of the wildfires that are currently raging throughout the West. What the fuck is up with NAZIS getting arrested for slinging nitrous on Thunder Road and (perhaps unrelated?) some dude getting smashed in the skull with a rock during the show on Saturday? What with the Tahoe PD putting Phish on Twitter blast for their fans trashing their pristine bucolic mountain hideaway and the ugly shit that just happened at the Gorge, this tour is starting to take on a real Grateful Dead 1995 vibe. I guess if I have to point a finger anywhere, it will be the middle one, and it would go in Trumplestiltskin’s Mango hued fart sniffer for continuing to be the instigator. But ultimately, we are doing this to ourselves by subscribing to the madness that continues to ooze out of the oval office. Seriously people, this IS the time for us to rise up and come together. But I digress.

The first set opens to the drawing of a "Curtain With" as the blistering heat of the sun finally drops beneath the thick stack of basalt that lies to the west of the amphitheater across the stretch of the Columbia River known as Wanapum Lake. The band is nimble and cohesive, twisting and turning as one unit following the lines of the river flowing South. The ensuing pairing of "The Birds" with "Birds of a Feather" kept the energy high, while simultaneously perhaps addressing the lowness of the previous night. I’ve always seen "Birds of a Feather" as a song about our flock, an anthem about the crowd in motion before the stage. Never did I expect to hear that there had been a seemingly unprovoked bird on bird ATTACK during a Phish show. Usually the worst thing that happens is somebody blowing smoke in your face or perhaps spilling a beer on your back. But actual skull smashing violence? I thought I left that behind on the 1992 Faith No More, Metallica, and Guns N' Roses tour. To lighten the mood, "The Birds" did feature some new squawks from Page, and inspired a far less violent tortilla war on the Mike side lawn and terrace. "Birds of a Feather," as it should, featured some "The Birds" quotes then gave way to "Waiting All Night." This nebulous undulating apology of a song was the only place I heard anything bump off key during the night and was itself a cheeky foreshadowing of what was to follow in the second frame.

"Stealing Time from the Faulty Plan" provides a snarling counterbalance to the sweet sublimity of the "Reba" which follows. "Reba" is the song that set the hook on my Phish fandom; the first one I heard (7/10/92 Empire Court) brought me to tears. It takes a lot to get me to cry these days. This one had no chance to cause such an effect, since the heat of the Columbia Plateau had sucked most of the fluid from my head over the course of the past two days. Next up was the BEST "WOMBAT" EVER, notwithstanding the Abe Vigoda dance bit featured in the original. Deep purple splash jelly (because a jam don’t shake like that). Want that. Had that. As the orange azurescens of the western sky deepened in color and Venus descended toward the Wenatchee Heights, "Tela" rode forth with an elegant force, much like the wind from beyond the mountains that had buckled the legs of my EZ-Up Shade tent while I was riding the Freedom Express the previous evening. The set concludes with a typically fiery "Walls of the Cave" and the half time whistle. Setbreak begs the question, why isn’t the multi-stall piss trough at the entrance to Johnny on the Spot alley? There could be a separate line for boys and girls. No traffic jam.

Although the prevailing wisdom was calling for a "Crosseyed and Painless" to open set 2, I was hoping for "Drowned." The hive mind won out, which was a mild disappointment owing in no small part to the fact that they did that whole "Crosseyed" basket weaving thing the last time they played the Gorge, but that soon passed. Completely unrelated to being volatilized through the Mantis portal of course. After Fish the Little Drummer Boy is done singing, this jam goes deep and dark, filled with swirling pixelated fractal mandalas, the all-seeing, all-knowing eye of the universe, and the nightly overpass of the International Space Station. Far out man. "Twist" was something I had been expecting when mapping out the potential setlist for the show earlier in the day. Avoiding the common "Oye Como Va" vamp, this version allegedly features teases of "Heartbreaker," "Crosseyed," and "Time Loves a Hero." Although the "C&P" licks were obvious, I’m going to have to do some relistening once I’ve unpacked all my gear to mine out the other two golden nuggets. Not like that will be a chore. "Waves" follows "Twist" and precedes "Miss You" for the second time in 365 days (see 7/23/17 Red Velvet night). Great song selection. Great vibe. Hat tip to all the friends who couldn’t make it to the Gorge this year, #MISSYOU! "Fluffhead" was to my ears flawless and left me quite ecstatic. If you want to point out a timing on a missed note anywhere, let me know. Nailed it. Page was busting passion buckets like an allstar. Staying true to the strong song selection format for the night, the set closes with a rich and powerful "Split Open and Melt," which ultimately cascades through sleight of hand into a "Crosseyed" reprise. "Wilson" encore seals the deal. All money, no whammies for night three.

This show served as a heat advisory forecast for the remainder of the tour. It is undoubtedly going to get hotter before the end of summer, but the heat may cause tempers to flare. So try to be cool... but punch all Nazis in the eye.

uctweezer Nice work Marty!

Re: Fluffhead, I too was struck by how well it was played, even thinking "did Trey actually practice 'Fluffhead'?" – alas, there were definitely some flubs. I won't bore you with the timings for all of them (there were a bunch of little bum notes here and there), but you'll hear several in a row from multiple band members starting at 4:55 [LP timing]... the next 15 seconds are a mess, but they recover quite nicely by 5:10. Such a great second set!

And it always brings along the scummiest part of the lot. I have no problem saying this. If you don’t want amoral bangers and wooks ruining the scene, DONT BUY NITROUS. THIS MEANS YOU.

Of course people are responsible for their own actions, but if you are unable to draw a straight line from Trump's rhetoric to Nazis feeling comfortable openly displaying their swatsika tattoos and otherwise emboldening the worst elements of society, that's willful blindness on your part.

Willful blindness? Hardly. When you speak of Trump's rhetoric, I assume you mean his handling of the Charlottesville situation. I agree he handled that very badly, but to use that as a direct line for Nazis displaying tattoos (how can the president of the United States control that) and acting like animals is to put far too much responsibility on one man and the federal government as a whole. Nazis were doing awful things - boldly - before Trump became president.

lycanthropist The point here isn't whether or not Trump is responsible. I am of the mind that Trump himself is symptom of a greater problem, but no need to get into that here.

The issue is what are we as a fanbase going to do to protect our scene. Blaming the president, getting into meaningless debates with each other, and panicking are not going to help the situation.

We need to as a community make a firm stance that this type of behavior will not be excepted at our shows and band together against any individuals or groups that champion hate.

On another note. Holy top shelfer Phish show Batman!

Agreed (generally) -- the analysis on .net is much deeper and more insightful. Those Jambase stats tables are nice, though!

Longhaireddan Jambase offers accurate if somewhat terse descriptions of shows, and has some nice stats at the end. I generally go there first to get the basic info, and then head to .net for the sometimes good reviews. Often the the .net reviews include pointless personal information, floods of descriptive words that don’t tell you a thing, floods of words that make sense to the author but don’t tell you a thing (as in the above review), or boring jaded vet speak.

As for the uh, diverse fan base...99% white. 60-70% male. It is not surprising that there would be Trump supporters in the fan base. One would like to think that there are not Nazis, and said Trump supporters do not support Nazis. Whether Trump is responsible for the increased visibility of such folks (or one might argue, our nation’s greater awareness of the entrenched racism in itself) is not a subject for a show review and is a bad start to a bad review of what seems to be the best show so far.

It does seem like the community needs to be taking better care this tour in re trash in Tahoe, whatever violent things happened at The Gorge. Phish has a clear message of community and love in their middle age and we should take it to heart.

I always get a laugh when Dead and Phish fans (which I am of both) always speak about how diverse their respective fans are. I've being going to Dead shows since the late 80's and Phish since the 90's and guess what the "diverse" fan base is still about 95% white. As for violence we can all agree there is no place for that at any concert, ever.

Good point! Why would we want politics as part of following a band that wrote an entire song cycle about the dangers of authoritarian dictators when we have a would be authoritarian dictator in power right now?

But seriously, I kid. If you want to come and just enjoy the music, that’s fine, but it’s possible to make a larger point about the world by examining the music or the scene, and I personally think that’s fair.

339mike yes but maybe can i go full gestapo on the nitrous carpetbaggers and get them the f&*k out of here?

Take , for example, Tahoe2 at the post-show street party going down on the stateline; that fun loving brass band jammed next to my truck for 1 hour and collected maybe $150 in tips. All the while, the nitrous gang in the shadows with thier clandestine operation profited maybe $5,000, sucking off the good will and energy that the brass band generated. Crazy, sad, and so wrong!

No shortage of willing participants forking over $5/balloon. Plenty of blood on the community's hand in this regard, actually supporting this undesirable element. Of course, the people of Tahoe lose their minds about all that debris ending up in the lake.

I will have no problem running off the tank man next time i see him/her. ( l.a. forum). I'm not into it. Plus, this nitrous 3.0 is organized street level drug dealing evidently now, and not your 1980's single tank guy, and he became a problem anyway.

User_43385_ Well, used to think the .net was a nice way to engage in learning more about the music but its only become more obvious that a majority % dont really care about the music. Its status symbol and bs politics. I voted but not for the Don, not a Nazi or a supporter, dont condone violence but I dont blame all societal issues on him or his administration nor do I see a parallel. Its 4-8 years. If you cant survive it, rise above and fight the good fight without pointing your own finger and stoking the fire with tit-for-tat negativity, you're just as wrong as the ones you say are wagging theirs at you. I'd be willing to bet most complainers, yet again, didnt even vote. Even when the band expresses their own political beliefs, they dont do it in such childish ways, and they certainly dont justify name-calling, blame games, etc by saying the other side struck first. Just time to go back to the only true right way to experience Phish: listen to the shows, make up your own mind, never read the comments reviews because theyre written just like clickbait tabloids. I knew it had potential just because its Phish, even more when I saw the setlist, and then I listened and it reaffirmed my own expectations. None of it was a waste of time until I got here.

, comment by Piper72
Piper72 Great review, Doctor Smarty. Every word was spot on, even your more stream-of-consciousness ones. And YES, even the political ones. Although, to be fair, I think how the current administration has affected the demeanor of our country is beyond politics. It is a behavioral, societal, and psychological pox on the face of society. A pox that has now manifested, after being years under the surface, in the more common appearance of Nazis, racists, bigots, misogynists and creeps. And yes, it could be argued that the administration has nothing to do with that; I for one call bullshit because with the way Cheeto Pendejo manipulates the media and social media, the things he says and doesn't say - if he's not outwardly giving permission, permission is implied. And Phish? Politics has never been fully absent from the discussion, nor from the band themselves. Remember Ramble Dove? That was members of Phish helping get Bernie Sanders elected to the U.S. Senate. Fish is now a Maine Selectman. Phish also contributed to foundations and charities that have political ties, like Waterwheel. So I don't buy the "politics doesn't belong in Phish or on a Phish board" argument. It should, however, be PRIMARILY about the band and their music. @longtimegone made a great point about wanting "politics as part of following a band that wrote an entire song cycle about the dangers of authoritarian dictators when we have a would be authoritarian dictator in power right now?" Because that is the synopsis of TMWSIY right there, and why the Wilsons of the world have to be kept from enslaving all the Lizards. And that's why, I believe, IMHO and whatever, that The Baker's Dozen was done IN NEW YORK - home of the Marmalade Dictator - and the show I saw, the peak show of the run (7/30) featured the legend of Colonel Forbin and his faithful Famous Mockingbird, who brought the Helping Phriendly Book back to the People. No. Coincidence.

Thoreau A couple of morons, probably deluded by way too many bad drugs, commit a random act of horrific violence at a show and you blame the POTUS? That is beyond ridiculous, shows how biased and one-sided your thinking is, and does nothing at all to either create justice in this situation. I read phish.net for the music, not for your ignorance of politics. The MSM has manipulated and propagandized the facts about the current administration for their own agenda to the point where even a formerly intelligent scene like this has been affected. So what do you then subscribe to the issues I saw 25 years on both Grateful Dead and Phish lots? I have seen more violent fights than I would like to remember on tours, much of it due to drugs and/or money. But I never once blamed Bill Clinton...
, comment by Doctor_Smarty
Doctor_Smarty Simultaneous acts of violence with the same M.O. against the same type of victim is not a random act of violence. It is coordinated terrorism and/or a hate crime. The most likely people to commit such a coordinated attack are white supremacists who may or may not have been emblazoned with Nazi tattoos. As others have stated, it isn't a big leap to assume that the Nazi tattooed nitrous dealers are connected to the white supremacist hate criminals. If you can't see how I can follow their command and control structure upwards through law enforcement to the upper levels of our government, no amount of pointing at it is going to illuminate the situation for you.

The events that surround the music are just as important to me as the music. The music was great, the bulk of the interpersonal encounters I had with other fans at the show was great, the scenery was great, the lights were great. But honestly, aren't they always fucking great? I like to focus my recaps on the stuff that is out of the ordinary. People getting bashed in the head with rocks is not normal. But I guess it is slowly becoming the new normal. The person most responsible for the changing dynamic in our society toward madness, atrocity, and blind rage is your dear leader.
